Develop Processes, Production Systems That Validate Each Step Upon Completion

No matter how many different 'worlds' we choose to live in, we must master the precise demands of each in order to thrive in that 'world'.

Can you identify Dr. Brian May in both photos? (click to enlarge)

The sky is the interest of Dr. May. Production systems, the interest of Toyota.

Dr. May is an English astrophysicist. Dr. May has a PhD. From the Imperial College, London, his Doctoral Thesis in Astrophysics, was on Interplanetary Dust. He has of Honorary Degrees from the Universities of Hertfordshire, Exeter and John Moore’s, Liverpool.

Dr. May, is also known as Brian May, lead guitarist, song writer for QUEEN, with over 100 million records sold and a career that spans four decades.

“Is this the real life,
is this just fantasy
Caught in a landslide,
no escape from reality
Open your eyes,
look up to the skies and see”

“Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen (on YouTube)”

Decoding DNA, recently at one of our Leadership huddles, one of our team was sharing that his child was just inducted into the National Honor Society (NHS). The discussion centered on the number of “star” varsity athletes that were inducted into the NHS.

Sometimes our vision is impaired, limited by our own experience, bias or paradigms.

Can’t a student excel at sports and the classroom?

Can’t one of the best rock guitarist’s also be an astrophysicist?

Trust the operators

Don’t be blinded by your paradigms.

The Toyota Production system offers its own paradox. On one hand, every activity, connection and production flow in a Toyota factory is rigidly scripted. Yet at the same time, Toyota’s operations are enormously flexible and responsive to customer demand.

The System, Toyota Production System is founded on four concepts.

• The way workers do their work
• The way they interact with each other
• How production lines are constructed
• How people learn to improve.

Every activity, connection and production path designed according to these rules must have built-in tests that signal problems immediately.

How People Work
(A.K.A. The Devil Is In the Detail)

The system believes and insures that all work is highly specified as to content, sequence, timing and outcome. This applies not just to repetitive motions of production workers, but to all people regardless of their function or hierarchical role.

An example is the installation of a seat on the assembly line; the order the bolts are installed, time to install each and torque are all specified. NO FREE FORM permitted!
Even complex and infrequent activities are designed according to this rule.

The activity is broken into separate activities.

Each unique activity is subdivided into a series of tasks.

Each Task is assigned to a specific person and they are instructed the sequence in which the must perform the task.

As each of the tasks are completed, the way the tasks were done are Compared to the original design and discrepancies are signaled.

As our Family Business telescopes and we expand our customer base. We must continue our focus, and deliver Quality.

Thunderbolt and lightning,
very very frightening me

Brian May is rated by Rolling Stone as one of the Top 50 Guitar Players.

Dr. Brian May is a PhD in Astrophysics; is the branch of astronomy that deals with the physics of the universe, including the physical properties luminosity, density, temperature, and chemical composition of celestial objects such as stars and galaxies.

Our teammates are diverse and like Brian, Dr May many live in two worlds, but quality must be a constant.
