The Real Work and Great Journey of Continuous Improvement

November 26, 2012 By HRB Family Business Consulting Leave a Comment

The real work begins because change is constant.

It may be that when we no longer know what to do
We have come our real work,
and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.

The real work begins now. As we track our success, recovery and growth we must celebrate and pause. We need an interlude, intermission a hiatus to recalibrate our goals. The first step in solving any challenge is admitting there is a challenge. Sometimes, especially when your team has success this can be difficult. Some will argue, ‘don’t mess with success’ or ‘if it ain’t broke don’t change it’ — this advice often misses the mark.

The market, competitors, new technologies, recent entrants are all transform the soul. The real work of our journey includes considering the utility our products provide. Our components — time, place, possession and form — make up the utility marketing model.

Production and Marketing supply 5 kinds of utility that are needed to provide consumer satisfaction:

  • Form – when someone makes something, they assemble a product from parts and you can use it
  • Task – when someone does something for you, like put ice cream in a cone, or change the oil in your car
  • Time – making sure the product is available when people need it
  • Place – making sure the product is accessible, bring it to the customer, or have it in convenient place
  • Possession – letting the customer have the product, usually after they pay, they can “possess” it and hold it, transport it etc.
  • The real mind work begins we are willing to face a change point and consider new, different ideas.

The real work begins when success is achieved. The real work maybe more difficult than success, because it requires change; change requires introspection, homework. The company needs to get closer to the mirror. Often times an industry analysis is a worthwhile study. Some of these include a variety of groups-

  • Local Economic Development experts
  • Key Suppliers
  • Key Customers
  • Industry Experts
  • Key Targets
  • This is not easy. This is not what we do to generate revenue and satisfy our customers but this is where the real work begins. The real journey takes us to cost benefit analysis of product lines and services. It may be that when we no longer know what to do.We have come our real work.

Continuous Improvement — Great to Greater!

Continuous Improvement is the real work and its a great journey.
